Thorns Yield to Roses -
Fresh, distinctive designs on functional surfaces - from stemware, serving pieces, wedding card and keepsake boxes for birthdays, babies weddings and anniversaries.
I believe there is value in creating something handmade -- it carries a bit of the soul of the artist.
I taught myself to paint after a car accident in January, 2000, that left me unable to read or write. I'd never painted before, but something in my head must've been shaken loose that enabled me to paint, even though I couldn't add. It's been an unexpected journey, but brain dents have been a blessing in many ways.
During my recovery, I could only look at 'pretty pictures' of flowers in magazines; i eventually took up gardening. Sometimes, understanding the directions on the seed packets took longer than planting the seeds. I couldn’t always garden, but simply touching the earth had a very calming effect. At summer’s end, the flowers faded, and I was drawn to painting, particularly roses.
I began learning to paint slowly and one night, I proudly posted a newly-painted rose on the refrigerator and asked my son what it looked like. When he replied, “It’s a red rose...” I was so excited — just like a kindergartner! Sometimes I still get discouraged from the brain dents but the creative process and tactile nature of painting has been an important part of my recovery thus far.
My journey has allowed me to connect and share a part of myself with some wonderful people all over the globe.
To me, painting is a deeply personal expression and I take great care to do my very best on each piece, from prep to shipping. I paint only my own original designs, and most of the time, I paint free-hand -- without stencils, decals or patterns. Each item bears my discrete artist's mark.
My husband, Tim, is the Partner-in-Charge of procurement and shipping, and also serves as Chief Artist Supporter and provider of caffeine.
After taking an interesting path to get here, I am now able to focus on my painting and feel proud yet humble to offer you my creations.
This quote sums up my journey and painting:
“You can complain because roses have thorns, or
You can rejoice because 'thorns' have roses.”
~ Abraham Lincoln
